Denise Holmes is an illustrator and picture book maker from Chicago, IL. She has been working in the publishing industry since 2014, when her first illustrated picture book, If I Wrote A Book About You, was published. Since then she has worked on over 17 picture books from activity, educational, baby board books to trade books.
When she started out, she knew her goal was to illustrate children’s books, but she struggled with how to create a scene. She felt pretty comfortable drawing characters, but trying to put her characters into a background felt impossible!
However with research, consistent daily practice and joining a critique group, she was able to conquer her fear of drawing backgrounds. With Let’s Make Picture Books she hopes to enable the same confidence in you to overcome your struggles by providing drawing prompts that will help develop your daily practice as well as a community to help give you inspiration and feedback.
Steph Fizer Coleman is a children’s book illustrator and licensing artist from Scott Depot, WV. She has been working full time as an illustrator for over a decade and has been illustrating children’s books for over 5 years. Steph has worked on over 25 children’s books across a variety of categories including activity books, educational books, nonfiction books, and trade books. Books she has illustrated include: Bird Count, Ninita’s Big World: The True Story of a Deaf Pygmy Marmoset, and Lali’s Feather.
When Steph set her sights on illustrating children’s books, she struggled to bridge the gap between making good art and telling visual stories. She could draw adorable animals all day but struggled when it came to adding the narrative details that make children’s books so special.
Steph bridged that gap eventually by improving her visual library and embracing the process of working through a whole bunch of bad art to get to the better art. In Let’s Make Picture Books, Steph is ready to help you along on your journey to illustrating children’s books too.
